- Regular trading ends at 1:00 PM ET instead of 4:00 PM
- Pre-market trading still starts at 4:00 AM ET
- After-hours trading does not occur following an early close
- CME equity futures (ES, NQ, YM, RTY) also close at 1:00 PM ET
- Early closes happen the day before major holidays - see dates above

What time does the market close on early close days?
1:00 PM Eastern Time — three hours earlier than the normal 4:00 PM close. Pre-market still opens at 4:00 AM ET. After-hours trading does not occur on these days.
How many early close days are there each year?
Typically 3 per year: July 3rd (the day before Independence Day), the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday. If a holiday falls on a weekend, an early close date may shift.
Do futures also close early on these days?
Yes. CME equity futures (ES, NQ, YM, RTY) follow the same early close schedule, ending at 1:00 PM ET. The normal Sunday evening open resumes the following week.
Is the Friday after Thanksgiving always an early close?
Yes, every year. The market closes at 1:00 PM ET — not 4:00 PM. Thanksgiving Day itself is a full market holiday. The exact date for each year is in the schedule above.
